The Sopranos ran on HBO for 6 episodes from 1999 until 2007 and is one of the best shows that has ever aired on television. Gritty and not for the squeamish, with graphic violence and sex alternating with domestic scenes and Tony Soprano’s sessions with his shrink, The Sopranos showcased the underbelly of American society. Groundbreaking in that its protagonist was decidedly not a good person, audiences nevertheless rooted for anxiety-stricken mob boss Tony Soprano.
One weak spot was Tony Soprano’s sessions with his shrink. Originally a novel concept, it ultimately ran its course, yet the show continued on with this pointless gimmick. Lorraine Bracco’s utter lack of acting ability didn’t help.
Nancy Marchand was a real standout as Tony’s mother.
Edie Falco was stellar as Tony’s wife.
