One Tree Hill: The Complete First Season

Aside from basketball, Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) and Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) have little in common -- but the two young men share the same father, Dan (Paul Johansson). Arrogant, wealthy and assured, Nathan is the star of the high school basketball team. Quiet and driven, Lucas is a legendary player on the playground and the product of a working single mom, Karen (Moira Kelly). After growing up in opposite worlds in the same small town, the half-brothers find their lives colliding. In the middle of the crossroads is Peyton (Hilarie Burton), Nathan's beautiful girlfriend who may have more in common with Lucas, and Lucas' platonic best friend, Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti). Sophia Bush also stars as Brooke.

One Tree Hill: The Complete First Season marks the beginning of a genuinely engrossing series that maintains, for a long while, an unusual focus on a single, powerful conflict defining the destinies of two characters. Adolescent half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) Scott have lived parallel lives in One Tree, North Carolina. They share a common father, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), who has disregarded the existence of Lucas, his son by a one-time flame, Karen (Moira Kelly), whom he dumped years before to accept a basketball scholarship to college. While neglecting Lucas, Dan--whose hoop dreams never materialized--has spent his time almost perversely micro-managing every one of Nathan's moves on and off the court at his old high school, where the lad is currently an arrogant superstar under gruff-but-wise coach Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin). Nathan (whose mother is separated from Dan) is a child of privilege and has been raised to disregard teamwork, compromise, or the feelings of others. He regards Lucas, a basketball sensation on neighborhood playgrounds, as trash, and his own girlfriend, Peyton (Hilarie Burton), as a pretty bauble he can abuse and dismiss at will. Still, he's sympathetic; one can see glimpses of the human being struggling to emerge from under Dan's control.

Meanwhile, Lucas helps Karen run her café, hangs out with platonic best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), and pines for Peyton (herself a punky misfit at heart). He also turns to surrogate dad Keith Scott (Craig Sheffer)--actually his uncle and Dan's older brother--for support, and sees himself as a perpetual and doomed outsider in One Tree. All that changes when Whitey invites Lucas to join the b-ball team that Nathan dominates, a move that challenges the status quo of multiple relationships in a small community. For about a third of its episodes, this series from creator Mark Schwahn (who wrote the hit film Coach Carter) stays true to the suspense surrounding Lucas's and Nathan's changes in fortune. Then a bit of padding follows to the end of the season; there are 22 episodes to fill out, after all. But even as various distractions (a kidnapping subplot, a car accident and coma for a major character) and random events creep in (Dan, rather incredibly, takes over the team from Whitey at one point, thus coaching both his sons), One Tree Hill remains highly watchable. The writing is shaped well and organic, while performances are consistently excellent. (It's especially good to see Sheffer, perhaps best known for A River Runs Through It, again.) --Tom Keogh

The first season of One Tree Hill was so great because the characters went on such a great journey through 22 episodes. Most shows do not want to go so fast in hopes they can chug along for a few seasons before having any major changes but not OTH. Nathan and Lucas' characters started out in episode 1 as enemies and ended as brothers. Haley was just a side character as Lucas' best friend and ended up becoming one of the most iconic characters in the entire nine year span of the show. Peyton was actually not bad in the first season and it is a shame the writers made her such a victim in later years. Even Brooke started out as a caricature and became something real by the end of the season. The 'adult' characters were really great too and Dan and Deb's divorce allowed Nathan to become a real person, not just the stereotypical jock he was in the beginning. Great beginning to a show that lasted nine seasons.

I bought this box set for a tenner years ago on and from the first episode I was hooked. I had a lot of friends who watched the show and it sounded interesting so I took a shot.

Lucas Scott is a street basketball player whose father, Dan, left his pregnant mother before he was born. It was there he met Deb Scott and also got her pregnant. Their son, Nathan, is the star of Tree Hill Ravens, the school basketball team. Dan's brother, Keith, helped to raise Lucas. Nathan's girlfriend, Peyton Sawyer is a cheerleader for the Ravens along with her best friend, Brooke Davis. Haley James is Lucas' best friend.

The actors are very well chosen and give great performances throughout the series. Chad Michael Murray plays the brooding outcast brilliantly and believably.
Paul Johansson is excellent as the Tree Hill villain, Dan.
Karen Roe - Moira Kelly
Nathan Scott- James Lafferty
Peyton Sawyer- Hilarie Burton
Brooke Davis- Sophia Bush
Haley James- Bethany Joy Lenz

One Tree Hill relies heavily on music to set the scene. What really works is the variety of music they use. From well known bands such as Snow Patrol and Stereophonics to underground acts. This is a great place to find some awesome new music to listen to.

With so many characters comes a lot of storylines. Most people can probably relate to at least one. I find this really helps me to connect with a show and its characters. There are twists and turns throughout, from Dan and Lucas' relationship to that of Keith and Karen. At times it is funny and at others particularly emotional. Watching the characters grow is very engaging and entertaining.

This box set includes additional scenes not shown on TV, commentaries by the cast and crew and behind-the-scenes footage.
I would recommend this to anyone, at least to watch the pilot. There are 22 episodes, each around 43 mins long. Well worth a tenner!
